Original Late 18th Century Pair of Antique Worcestershire Maps – W.h. Toms 1742 & John Cary 1787

18th century
Description

Type of Artwork: Pair of Original Antique County Maps – Worcestershire

Surface: Laid paper

Artists/Engravers: W.H. Toms (1742) – “A Map of Worcestershire, North West from London,” engraved and published September 29th, 1742.

John Cary (1787) – “Worcestershire,” hand-coloured copperplate engraving, published London, Sept. 1st, 1787.

Description: A fine pair of original antique maps of Worcestershire, engraved in the 18th century.

The earlier example, engraved by W.H. Toms in 1742, features detailed topography, towns, fairs, and parliamentary information. The second, engraved by John Cary in 1787, is delicately hand-coloured, showing towns, roads, rivers, and county boundaries with Cary’s typical precision.

Both maps are genuine period impressions (not reproductions), on laid paper, with expected signs of age — light toning, folds, and faint handling marks. Together, they provide an excellent comparison of cartographic styles across the 18th century.

Approximate Age of Artwork: 1742 and 1787

Condition Report: Both maps remain in very good condition for their age, with strong impressions and visible plate marks. Some light toning and fold lines as shown, but no major tears or repairs. Please study the photographs provided.

Size (approx): Toms map: 18 × 15 cm (sheet) Cary map: 31 x 24 cm (sheet)

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century British county maps were typically created using copperplate engraving, featuring detailed topographical markers, roads, calligraphic cartouches, and precise county boundary lines.

These maps were printed using oil-based ink from engraved copper plates onto handmade rag paper, which frequently displays distinct chain lines and watermarks.

Authentic prints from this era exhibit a visible indented plate mark around the image border, age-appropriate patination or foxing, and impression lines from the copper plate.

Mount antique maps in understated wooden frames using acid-free matting, placing them in symmetrical pairs or as part of a gallery wall in study or hallway spaces.

Protect paper maps by framing them behind UV-filtering glass with conservation-grade backing, ensuring they are displayed away from direct sunlight and areas of high humidity.
