The Spinario, or Boy with Thorn, is a classical Greco-Roman subject depicting a seated youth removing a thorn from his foot. During the 18th and 19th centuries, bronze reductions of this ancient sculpture were cast by European foundries as Grand Tour mementos for cultured travellers.

19th-century Grand Tour bronzes were typically produced using lost-wax or sand casting methods followed by manual chasing to refine details. Foundries often used mechanical reduction machines to faithfully copy ancient originals at smaller decorative scales.

Authentic period bronzes display hand-chased hair and facial features, smooth casting interiors, and genuine surface patina acquired over time. Many 19th-century examples feature cold-stamped foundry marks, such as F. Barbedienne or mechanical reduction seals, on the base.

A classical bronze reduction functions well as a focal point on a mantelpiece, dark wood desk, or bookshelf. Placing the sculpture against a neutral background highlights its silhouette, while pairing it with books or architectural items complements a traditional library setting.

Dust the bronze regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft brush to reach detailed crevices. Chemical cleaners and abrasive polishes should be avoided; applying a thin coat of microcrystalline wax annually helps protect the surface from moisture and oxidisation.
