Heritage & Craftsmanship

Crafted at the turn of the 20th century, this three-panel leather screen reflects the Victorian love of beauty and practicality. The hand-painted pastoral and floral scenes are rendered in soft greens, ochres, and warm browns, their gentle wear telling the story of a century’s worth of rooms and lives. Arched tops add architectural grace, while the leather’s natural patina and visible signs of age give it a depth and authenticity that modern reproductions cannot match.

Visual Details

Our photographs show the delicate brushwork of the floral sprays, the softly faded tones of the countryside scenes, and the gentle craquelure of the paint. The reverse reveals the plain leather back with honest wear, while the hinges display the mellowing of their original metal finish. These images form an essential part of the condition report for complete purchasing confidence.

Styling Suggestions

Use this screen to create an intimate reading nook, add architectural interest to an empty corner, or serve as a graceful dressing screen in a bedroom. Its height and gentle curve make it ideal as a backdrop for a console table or to frame a seating area. The warm patina and pastoral scenes pair effortlessly with antique furniture, yet also provide a striking contrast against clean, contemporary lines.

Sustainable Style

Choosing antiques is both an aesthetic and environmental decision. By preserving and re-homing this screen, you are keeping traditional craftsmanship alive and reducing the demand for modern mass-production.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Leather screens originated in Spain and Holland in the 16th and 17th centuries, where embossed and painted leather was used as wall coverings and room partitions. By the late 19th century, European workshops produced decorative screens featuring classical landscapes, floral motifs, and rococo scrollwork to block draughts and partition large living spaces.

These pieces typically consist of leather panels stretched over wooden framework frames, held in place with metal tacks or brass studs. The decorative surfaces were hand-painted using oil pigments and finished with protective lacquers or varnishes.

Authentic period screens exhibit natural craquelure across the painted surface, aged patination on the reverse fabric or leather backing, and historical wear near the hinges and edges. Original brass tacks will often show signs of minor oxidisation.

A painted screen can be placed freestanding in an empty corner or behind a sofa to introduce height and textural interest. Alternatively, individual panels can be mounted flat on a wall to serve as large-scale decorative artwork.

Keep the screen positioned away from direct sunlight, radiators, and moisture sources to prevent the leather from drying out or cracking. Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical solvents or wet cleaning agents on painted surfaces.
