Description

HENRI JACOT: a particularly fine quality and thoroughly original French Repeating CARRIAGE CLOCK by this famous maker. The case is of “Gorge” design (the most expensive standard case available at the time) with bevelled glass panels all around and a very thick bevelled glass panel to the top, through which the original lever platform escapement can be observed. The eight-day movement strikes hours and half-hours on a melodious gong and repeats the hours at will via the upper button. The movement is signed with the Jacot trademark to the backplate and further signed inside the movement. The crisp enamel dial is perfect as are the originbal blued steel hands. In perfect working order and keeping excellent time. Complete with its original leather-covered travelling case (showing signs of some wear).

**Henri JACOT was one of the great French Carriage Clock makers of the 19th century. His father (also Henri) founded the business around 1835 developing his own tools and machinery in order to make his own components. In 1867 and 1878 the firm won silver medals at the Paris Exhibitions for their Carriage Clocks, followed by Gold Medals in 1889 and 1900. The quality and beauty of the workmanship has helped make clocks by Jacot become some of the most highly sought-after carriage clocks available on the market today.

(The Jacot trademark comprises the initials "H" and "J" flanking a parrot on a stand. A "Jacot" is French for a parrot or "Pretty Polly"...)
