Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pique jewellery refers to decorative items made by inlaying precious metals, such as gold or silver, along with mother-of-pearl into organic materials like tortoiseshell or horn. The technique originated in seventeenth-century France and reached peak popularity during the mid-Victorian era.

Victorian pique pieces typically utilise natural tortoiseshell as a base material, combined with pure silver or carat gold wire and sheet cutouts. Mounts and borders were frequently constructed from sterling silver or low-carat gold with rope-twist or engine-turned detailing.

Authentic mid-nineteenth-century pique features flush or slightly raised hand-cut metal inlays embedded directly into the tortoiseshell rather than glued to the surface. Under magnification, slight irregularities in the hand-engraved motifs and natural colour variation in the organic substrate are visible.

These historical pieces are frequently converted or worn as focal pendants on silver chains or velvet ribbons. Brooches can be attached to jacket lapels, silk scarves, or collared shirts to introduce texture and historical contrast to modern tailoring.

Organic materials like tortoiseshell require stable humidity and should be stored away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture. Clean gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical solvents, liquid cleaners, or ultrasonic baths which strip natural oils and loosen metal inlays.
