A fine George II period Cuban mahogany oval dining table, dating from circa 1730. The thick, solid, and beautifully figured top is constructed from three substantial leaves of the earliest and highest-quality Cuban mahogany – a timber once considered the king of woods, prized for its exceptional density, weight, durability, and beauty. By the end of the 18th century, true Cuban mahogany was no longer commercially available, making tables of this standard increasingly rare.
The oval drop-leaf top is supported on single gatelegs and raised on a substructure of turned tapering legs with offset pad feet, all typical of the early Georgian period. This is an excellent early 18th-century table, offering elegance, presence, and practicality.
Dimensions:
Height: 71 cm (28'')
Width (leaves up): 149.25 cm (58.75'')
Width (leaves down): 50 cm (19.75'')
Depth: 138.5 cm (54.5'')
Condition:
Good original condition, structurally very sound and sturdy. The table has undergone mi
...nor sympathetic repairs to preserve its authenticity and usability. Two original cast iron hinges were beyond repair and replaced with period-correct examples; small associated repairs were made to the rule joints, while stable areas of historic wear were left untouched to preserve originality. An old repair to the top above one hinge and a discreet earlier repair on one gateleg remain in place, both stable and adding to the table’s story.
The surface retains its original polish with a rich, mellow colour and attractive patina, never French polished or refinished. Sensitively cleaned and waxed in our workshop, it is now ready for everyday use. Marks, wear, and small blemishes are consistent with age and only enhance its character.
A wonderful early Georgian dining table, rare for its scale, timber, and survival — combining the elegance of the 18th century with the practicality required for modern living.
