Description

In original, unrestored condition and with a lovely rich colour, this weighted JAQUES STAUNTON EBONY AND BOXWOOD CHESS SET is a joy to handle.

Research suggests it dates from the second half of the 19th Century and maybe the ‘Anderson’ Pattern which dates from c1860. It comes in a MAHOGANY BOX with a green paper label inside the lid and stamped, brass hinges.

The WHITE KING is stamped JAQUES LONDON. Two Castles (1B and 1W) and 2 Knights (1B and 1W) are stamped with a red crown. The SET is weighted and baized.

Displaying its use over the years, there are some knocks and grazes.

White pieces:

King missing top

Knight front jaw missing

Pawns One ball reglued and one chip to collar

Black pieces:

King chip to cross on top

Queen coronet chipped away

Bishop one top of Mitre missing

Pawns chipped collars to three

There are generally some old cracks.

The Mahogany Box is worn.

The Board is for sale separately.
