Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A canopy top box settle is a high-backed wooden bench featuring an overarching carved canopy header and an integrated lift-top storage box beneath the seat. Originating in early modern Europe, these pieces provided protection from cold draughts while offering practical storage for household items.

Traditional settles are constructed from solid oak using mortise and tenon joinery, panelling, and hand-carved decorative motifs. High-backed settles frequently incorporate heavy frame-and-panel construction to accommodate natural timber expansion while maintaining structural integrity.

Authentic early 20th-century revival pieces display secondary timber wear on internal surfaces, natural shrinkage around joinery, crisp geometric or floral carving, and period-appropriate iron hinges or lifting mechanisms within the storage compartment.

Position the settle in an entryway or expansive hallway to serve as functional seating and hidden storage. Pair the dark timber with neutral walls, textured wool cushions, or minimalist lighting to balance the heavy visual weight of the wood.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax twice a year along the grain. Avoid placement directly adjacent to radiators or air vents to prevent cracking and warping of the solid oak panels.
