Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the Orkney Islands off the northern coast of Scotland, Orkney chairs were traditionally crafted by local crofters. The signature high, curved straw back was developed to shelter sitters from severe draughts in stone cottages where timber was scarce.

Traditional Orkney chairs feature a solid wooden frameoften made from pine, oak, beech, or salvaged driftwoodpaired with a backrest hand-woven from oat straw or marram grass tied with hemp.

Authentic pieces feature hand-stitched oat straw coils bound with natural cordage, simple joinery on the timber frame, and evidence of hand-planed or pegged timber construction along the seat rails and stretchers.

Place an Orkney chair in a reading corner or alongside natural linen upholstery to highlight its rich tactile texture and organic materials within a contemporary rustic or modern folk aesthetic.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent the straw from drying out and snapping. Dust the straw back gently using a soft-bristled brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner, and nourish the wooden frame with natural wax.
