Jones & Walley ‘Gipsey’ Relief Moulded Jug C1850

19th century
Description

This very well-detailed VICTORIAN RELIEF MOULDED STONEWARE JUG was made at the VILLA POTTERY, COBRIDGE by JONES & WALLEY around 1850.

The base bears an impressed, applied cartouche with the details: Published July 1, 1849 by Jones & Walley, Cobridge. GIPSEY 24.

This short-lived Factory specialised in Relief Moulded Stoneware Jugs.

The details of the GIPSEY Encampment on this Jug are notable. One side shows a Mother and two children within a tent, alongside a dog, two gentlemen and a barrel of ale. The other shows a cauldron hung over an open fire.

The condition is good. There is a tiny, thin sliver of old restoration to the inside lip.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Relief moulded jugs are ceramics produced primarily in the 19th century using plaster moulds to create raised, three-dimensional decorative scenes on the outer surface.

These jugs were typically made from stoneware, earthenware, or parian body ceramics, often finished with a clear salt glaze, lead glaze, or enamel finish.

Authentic pieces often feature maker marks stamped or moulded into the base, British Design Registration marks used from 1842 onwards, crisp definition in the moulded relief, and subtle wear or unglazed areas along the foot rim.

A relief moulded jug can be displayed as a standalone object on a sideboard, styled with dried florals on a dining table, or grouped with other antique stoneware on open shelving.

Clean the ceramic using warm water and a mild dish soap with a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive sponges or prolonged soaking if surface crazing is present.
