Kister, Scheibe-alsbach (Thuringia), Pair of Porcelain Figural Flower Carts, C.1887.

19th century
Description

A matched pair by Kister Porzellan-Manufaktur (KPM), Scheibe-Alsbach, circa 1887. Young figures in 18th-century dress pull shell-form carts on large wheels. Each cart presents a lion mask to the front with a rocaille leaf ornament above; sides with rocaille scrolls; interiors plain white. The oval bases carry sponged earth-tone coloring typical for Thuringian porcelain of the late nineteenth century. Painting in a Dresden-style pastel palette with raised “pearl” gilding — a noted Kister finish. Underglaze blue “KPM” over crossed strokes, impressed 1445-9; vent hole. From 1877 Professor Reinhard Möller directed the artistic department. In the 1890s Kister broadened production with pairs and centerpieces — dancers, dancing couples, historical figures — and lace figures taking inspiration from early Meissen prototypes. Comparable Kister groups include carts, sledges and children with barrows in the same palette and raised gilding. A desirable and well-preserved pair with secure Kister attribution and clear collector appeal.

Condition:

Female: small loss to one wheel hub; otherwise excellent, colors and gilding intact.

Male: excellent, decoration fully preserved.

Dimensions and weight:

Female: 18.5 × 19.5 × 12 cm; 991 g.

Male: 18 × 19 × 12 cm; 987 g.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Thuringian porcelain figural carts are 19th-century decorative vessels produced in the Thuringia region of Germany, combining sculpted human figures with small open containers meant for flower display or tabletop ornament.

These pieces were produced using hard-paste porcelain cast in detailed moulds, hand-painted with polychrome enamel pigments, and finished with gilded highlights applied prior to final firing.

Authentic Scheibe-Alsbach items feature specific blue underglaze factory marks, refined mould detail, delicate hand-painted pastel detailing, and gilding along structural edges like wheels and scrollwork.

These decorative objects can be placed on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table as accent pieces, paired with minimalist contemporary decor to highlight their intricate Rococo Revival forms.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry paintbrush. Avoid chemical cleansers and prolonged water exposure, as moisture and friction can damage overglaze enamels and gold leafing.
