Satsuma Tripod Covered Box, Attributed to Kinkozan, Kyoto, C.1890

19th century
Description

A fine Japanese Satsuma covered box, Meiji period, attributed to the celebrated Kinkozan workshop in Kyoto. Of circular form on three sturdy legs, with a gently rounded flat lid. The creamy crackled glaze is decorated with vibrant multicolored bouquets, the petals and leaves heightened with gilt. A geometric “sayagata” border in black and gold encircles the lid. Interior details include purple floral sprigs painted inside the base and lid, a rare feature found on higher quality pieces. The underside bears a rectangular black cartouche with partially gilt characters, a mark consistent with Kinkozan studio. Kinkozan was the most important Kyoto studio for export luxury Satsuma, renowned for refined enamel and gilding. This tripod box demonstrates the high standards of Kyoto production at the end of the 19th century.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
