A Fine Antique Mahogany Pedestal Desk in the Manner of Thomas Chippendale

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Culvertons
Description

This meticulously crafted antique mahogany pedestal desk, created in the Chippendale style just prior to World War I, exemplifies intricate 18th-century classical motifs such as Greek key detailing, blind fret moulding, ogee bracket feet, and gadroon moulding, all masterfully integrated by Thomas Chippendale. It features original, high-quality working Chubb locks dated 2 July 1914 and has been carefully restored to highlight its original craftsmanship and functional elegance. This desk would categorise as Chippendale revival, but unlike many produced during the early part of the 20th Century, the cabinet maker sourced mahogany of a superior nature; the wonderful timber used for the desk’s top is testament to this. The desk offers practical dimensions with ample legroom and working width, measuring 76 cm in depth by 153 cm in width, with a kneehole of 65 cm in height by 61.5 cm in width. A desk designed to be admired for generations.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chippendale style pedestal desk is defined by its mid-to-late 18th-century English design elements, including rich mahogany timber, carved decorative mouldings such as blind fretwork, cast brass hardware, and dramatic carved claw-and-ball or carved paw feet.

These desks were primarily crafted from solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings, while hardware was typically cast from solid brass.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, irregular construction marks on unseen surfaces, and natural oxidisation on the underside and back. Original brass drop handles will often show casting imperfections and historic patination.

Position the desk against a neutral or dark backdrop to accentuate the mahogany wood grain. Pair it with a modern desk chair in leather or textured fabric and modern brass or matte black task lighting to create a balanced scheme.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft microfibre cloth following the wood grain. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
