Kynoch, born in Portobello, Edinburgh, trained at the Glasgow School of Art (1959–64), winning the Royal Scottish Academy Prize (1963) and the Haldane Travelling Scholarship (1964). Her career brought numerous awards, including the Latimer (1969, 1974) and Mary Armour Prizes (1994, 1997, 2006). She taught part-time at Glasgow School of Art (1980–90), was elected to the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (1994), and later to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (2021).
Her portrait commissions include leading Scottish academics, judges, and politicians, with works held in public collections such as the Hunterian, Kelvingrove, several universities, the Royal Scottish Conservatoire, and Dover House, London. She exhibited widely with the Royal Scottish Academy, the RGI, the RP, and major private galleries.
