Antique Double Sided Brass Tobacco Box Dated 1867

19th century
Description

A 19th Century double sided brass tobacco box, of rectangular for with canted corners, the top with a circular reserve engraved with a 'daisy wheel' / hexafoil motif (see note below), surrounded by punched foliate decoration, the reverse similarly decorated with a vacant reserve, the front dated 1867 and applied reeded and beaded borders.

The top opens to reveal one single compartment, the reverse with two inner hinged compartments, one of which sectional for mixing.

In good condition overall with tight fitting lids, one hinge on the bottom compartment has an old lead solder repair.

The daisy wheel symbol, also known as a hexafoi, is a six-petaled flower shape formed by intersecting circles, often found as an apotropaic mark meant to ward off evil spirits or bad luck.
