Antique Georgian Snap Top Table Bird Cage

Description

A good Georgian period solid mahogany birdcage design tiptop table in nice clean condition dating from around 1800.

The table has is original hand forded iron catch in working order and a birdcage platform for rotation of the table top. It stand on a traditional solid mahogany column with tripod base. The table is in great shape overall, one if the pad foot legs has a reinforcement but very sound.

Great size and condition ready for use.

This measures 72 cms high 78 cms in diameter and is 115 cms high when tipped open.

A Georgian tilt-top table, also known as a snap-top table, is an 18th-century British table design featuring a hinged circular surface mounted on a central pedestal tripod base. The top rotates vertically when unlocked, allowing the table to be placed flat against a wall to clear floor space in multipurpose Georgian reception rooms.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its dense grain and durability. Construction techniques included hand-carved pedestal columns, dovetail-jointed block mechanisms or birdcage actions, and hand-turned cabriole legs attached to the base with cut steel or iron spider plates.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-saw marks on the underside of the top, irregular hand-cut dovetails on the birdcage block, and original iron catch mechanisms. Natural shrinkage over centuries usually results in an oval top rather than a perfect circle, alongside genuine patination around the legs and feet.
