A rare pair of Arts & Crafts era turquoise-glazed ceramic relief plaques, circa 1909, finished in richly mottled teal-blue and presented in gilt-lined ebonized frames.

Children with Dog (Enfants au Chien) ?? – playful putti wrestling with a hound, one child astride its back.

Children with Goat (Enfants à la Chèvre) ?? – a spirited group tugging and climbing around a goat, brimming with Rococo vitality.

Both works reinterpret Rococo reliefs by Claude Michel, known as Clodion (1738–1814), famed for his depictions of cherubs and Bacchic revelry.

High relief casting with finely modeled surfaces.

Arts & Crafts glazing in lustrous blue-green tones, accentuating depth and contrast.

Dynamic Rococo compositions fused with early 20th-century craftsmanship.

Unsigned, in keeping with early workshop practice. Likely executed by Reginald Robert Tomlinson during his apprenticeship with Minton, Hollins & Co., c.1909, after the manner of Clodion.

?? Artist Biography – Reginald Robert Tomlinson (1885–1978)

Training: Farnham School of Art; apprenticed under Bernard Moore (1906–09).

Ceramic Career: Designer at Minton, Hollins & Co. (1909); later Art Director at Crown Staffordshire. Exhibited at the 1910 Arts & Crafts Exhibition.

Painting Career: From the 1920s, became a respected painter of portraits and allegories. Works held at Guildhall Art Gallery, The Wilson (Cheltenham), and The Potteries Museum.

Leadership & Publications: Principal of Cheltenham School of Arts & Crafts; published Picture and Pattern Making for Children (1934) and Children as Artists (1947).

Honours: R.B.A. member, Master of the Art Workers’ Guild, awarded the O.B.E. (1955).

Customs Payment & Brexit

Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD operates on a Delivery Duty Unpaid (DDU) basis which means that the International buyer is responsible for any import duties, taxes & customs clearance charges and any other customs charges which may be necessary to release an order from international customs.

Following the UK leaving the EU on 1st January 2021 (BREXIT) there have been some changes to customs & duty charges for EU customers. Tax and import duty varies from country to country so we recommend you check with your local tax office to see if any fees will be payable.
