Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Claret jugs originated in the 19th century and remained popular through the Edwardian era specifically for decanting and serving French red wines, traditionally referred to as claret in Britain. Combining glass vessels with elaborate metal mounts, they allowed sediment to settle while displaying the colour of the wine during formal dining.

These jugs are generally constructed with heavy cut crystal or blown glass bodies, paired with electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or solid sterling silver collars, spouts, handles, and hinged lids.

Authentic pieces feature period makers marks or EPNS stamps on the underside or rim of the metalwork, hand-cut glass facets, precise fitting of the metal collar to the glass neck, and traditional decorative motifs such as scrolling foliage or armorial finials.

A pair of claret jugs can be styled on a mahogany sideboard, a brass drinks trolley, or positioned centrally on a dining table tray, where ambient lighting highlights the diamond cuts in the glass.

Clean the glass interior with warm water and mild soap using a soft flask brush, avoiding extreme temperature changes that cause cracking. Polish the silver mounts gently with a soft cloth and specialized silver cream, ensuring polish residue does not accumulate in the relief details.
