Balloon back chairs emerged in the 1830s during the early Victorian period, defined by a rounded, continuous curved backrest resembling a hot-air balloon. They remained a staple of 19th-century dining rooms, combining open structural space with decorative carved horizontal splats.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, selected for structural integrity and grain figure. The seats were traditionally upholstered over horsehair padding, finished with fabrics such as velvet, damask, or leather.
