Description

An 18th Century Italian Silver Gilt Console Table.

This piece is a fine example of rococo period design, the table frame being serpentine on every side. The marble is also particularly well figured. The table frame is ornamented with shells on the incurved knees and in the centre of the frieze with additional leafy, naturalistic decoration. All of this detailing is very well carved. The ground of the frieze includes a lot of textured detailing in the gesso preparation which has survived in excellent condition. The table is finished in the trademark Italian silver gilt - an attractive mixture of silvering and gilding. This finish has an excellent colour and patination.

The sides of the table are just as highly carved and finished as the front with further shell work and leaf carving. The piece stands on four knurled feet with additional leafy detailing.
