Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century Continental bureau is characterised by a sloping writing flap that opens to reveal internal drawers and compartments, positioned above a chest of lower drawers. These pieces often feature contrasting wood veneers, geometric inlays, and classical proportions typical of European cabinetry from this era.

Cabinetmakers commonly constructed the primary frame from softwoods or oak, applying exterior veneers of walnut, rosewood, or fruitwood. Dovetail joints were standard for drawer construction, accompanied by hand-cast brass or metal lock mechanisms and decorative escutcheons.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, and natural shrinkage cracks along wide timber panels. Additionally, genuine age produces uneven patination around keyholes, handles, and areas subjected to regular contact.

A walnut bureau functions well as a compact home office desk or focal storage chest in a living room, hallway, or study. Pairing the warm timber tones with contemporary lighting or neutral wall shades highlights the woodwork while retaining modern functionality.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove loose particles. To preserve the original finish, apply a thin layer of high-quality beeswax paste annually, buffing gently along the natural grain, and keep the item away from direct sunlight or damp heat sources.
