Painting of Coastal Landscape with Ship and Fisherman at Dusk, Duncan Fraser Mclea (1841-1916)

19th century
Description

Duncan Fraser McLea (1841-1916)

Coastal Landscape with Ship and Fisherman at Dusk

Date: 1894

Medium: Oil on canvas

Provenance: From a private UK collection. Signed lower left-hand side and dated “94” (1894)

Overall measurements with the frame are 63xm x 45cm x 5cm and the painting itself measured at 47.5cm x 30.5cm

An extremely atmospheric and beautifully composed oil painting by the British landscape and seascape painter Duncan Fraser McLea (1841-1916).

The work offered is an extremely fine example of this distinctive and unique artist’s work. The attention to detail is typical of the artist’s work as is the rendering of the light and form that are characteristic of McLea’s maritime-themed compositional studies.

Born in Scotland but settled in South Shields after a period at sea, McLea is a celebrated Northumbrian artist who was best known for his coastal scenes.

McLea exhibited widely and is well documented in various reference books including 'The Artists of Northumbria' by Marshall Hall. The artist’s work is comparatively rare to the market and is highly collectable.

McLea spent several years working at sea, before focusing on his art. Due to his experience at sea, his work often depicts maritime scenes. He exhibited his work primarily in Northumbria, Scotland at the Royal Central Exchange Art Gallery, the Berwick Club, and the South Shields Art Club.

Condition report:

In very good, largely original cleaned condition with a few very small well-blended retouching. Framed in what is probably a late 20th century reproduction frame with aperture which is in very good condition. There is some fine craquelure to the paint surface and the paint surface itself is stable. There is one small repair to the verso which is not visible from the front. The tonality is excellent, and the canvas is in good tension.
