Description

This is an exceptionally large and deeply carved panel, representing a significant piece of French devotional art from the 17th century. Executed in solid walnut, the work is a masterful example of the provincial Baroque style, heavily influenced by the robust and sculptural forms of the Louis XIII period.

The central tableau presents the iconic biblical scene of the Baptism of Christ. Saint John the Baptist administers the sacrament to a reverent Jesus in the River Jordan. The carving is rendered in impressive high relief, lending the figures a powerful, three-dimensional presence. This scene is ingeniously framed by a bold octagonal border, which in turn is surrounded by a magnificent square frame of sculptural C-scrolls and volutes.

Provenance & Rarity: Attributed to a provincial French or Flemish workshop, circa 1640-1680. Panels of this scale and quality are increasingly rare on the market. It was likely once part of a larger ecclesiastical ensemble.

Condition Report:

The panel is presented in a very good antique condition, commensurate with its great age. The structure is solid and sound. The surface possesses a deep, authentic patina. There are several stable, age-related shrinkage cracks in the wood. As is characteristic for European woodwork of this era, there is evidence of historic (non-active) woodworm, primarily visible on the reverse.
