Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian shagreen tea caddy is a specialized container produced during the eighteenth century to store loose tea leaves. Covered in shagreen, a untanned ray or shark skin known for its textured pebbled surface, these caddies were crafted to protect valuable tea from moisture and light.

Eighteenth-century tea caddies were constructed from timber carcasses covered in luxury materials such as shagreen, mahogany, tortoiseshell, or lacquered papier-mache. The interiors frequently contained cut glass or silver canisters lined with velvet or foil to maintain freshness.

Authentic pieces display period hallmarking on the silver components, naturally irregular skin nodules on the shagreen exterior, and hand-cut facets on glass canisters. Early Georgian examples often feature cast silver mounts, hand-chased lids, and functional silver lock plates.

Place the caddy open on a sideboard, gentlemans library desk, or bookshelf to showcase the contrasting velvet lining and glass canisters. Displaying it alongside contemporary art or polished brass items creates a refined textural vignette in traditional or modern spaces.

Keep shagreen items away from direct sunlight, central heating, and high humidity to prevent shrinking or warping of the natural skin. Clean silver components gently with a microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that could seep into adjacent velvet or shagreen.
