A fine late-Victorian circa 1900 oil on canvas portraying the illustrious Marchesa Elena Grimaldi Cattaneo — one of Genoa’s most prominent noblewomen of the early 17th century.
 
This work, painted after the celebrated composition of Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641), retains the same elegance, poise, and commanding presence that made the original a Baroque masterpiece.
 
Elena Grimaldi was born into the powerful Grimaldi family, with far-reaching influence over Mediterranean trade, finance, and politics. Her marriage to Marchese Nicola Cattaneo united two of Genoa’s wealthiest dynasties. Admired for refinement, education, and virtue, she epitomised the Genoese matriarch — chaste, loyal, and proud of her lineage. This portrait was as much a symbol of power as a work of art.
