Daisy Makeig-jones Wedgwood Lustre Plates, Set of Six, — Whitefriars Retail Order

1900 - 1920
Description

A rare set of six Wedgwood blue lustre plates designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones circa 1915 (pattern X8485). Powder-blue mottled ground with lavish hand-gilded decoration: birds, Japanese-inspired pines and landscapes, a rural village view; continuous gilt wave-and-scroll rims. These plates were sold as functional tableware, yet their pristine condition shows they were never used. A rare case for Makeig-Jones’ designs—typically decorative rather than utilitarian—and exceptionally preserved, with prestigious retailer provenance. All six plates are double-marked — Wedgwood and special retail order for James Powell & Sons (Whitefriars Glass Works, London). Whitefriars were premier London glass and stained-glass makers who retailed Wedgwood in their showrooms and presented such ensembles at exhibitions of the period. Dual-marked examples are recorded in institutional collections (including the V\&A and the Museum of London) and are coveted by advanced collectors.

Size (each): Ø 22.6 cm; H 2.7 cm. Total weight approx. 2,487 g.

Condition: Excellent antique condition; bright lustre and sharp gilding.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
