Eloise Harriet Stannard (Follower), Still Life with Baskets, Bird’s Nest & Flowers, Antique Watercolour

19th century
For Sale by Brave Fine Art
Description

This late 19th-century English School watercolour depicts an array of flora nestled into a mossy bank, together with a bird’s nest and two baskets.

Late 19th-century English still life painters, such as the Clare family, had a skill for capturing nature’s bounty with finesse. George Clare (1835-1890), for example, would forage through hedgerows for inspiration and his works evoke a gentle walk through the English countryside.

This piece, signed E H Stannard in the lower right, references Eloise Harriet Stannard (1829-1915), the Norwich-based artist. However, we feel that it’s closer to the work of George Clare’s son, Vincent Clare (1855-1930). Either way, it’s a charming portrayal.

Held in a later frame.

Medium: Watercolour on paper

Overall size: 31½” x 26½” / 80cm x 67cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian botanical still life paintings are recognised for their detailed, naturalistic portrayals of flowers, plants, and natural elements, often arranged in rustic settings or baskets.

Artists during the nineteenth century typically worked with finely ground natural pigments suspended in gum arabic, applied onto heavy cotton or linen rag paper.

Authentic period watercolours often display natural age-related toning, period framing techniques, hand-drawn detailing, and subtle foxing on paper.

These artworks work well when hung above sideboards or consoles, paired with neutral walls and traditional or eclectic decorative objects.

Preserve watercolour paper by displaying it away from direct sunlight, maintaining stable humidity, and utilizing UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting materials.
