A Collectable Isle of Man Silver Bookmark

1900 - 1920
Description

A wonderful and collectable piece of George V silverware. This useful book mark is of good size and features the rather unusual terminal of the Isle of Man emblem.

The Isle of Man emblem is a triskelion of three armoured legs, conjoined at the thigh, and spurred. This emblem, often referred to as the "Three Legs of Mann" is featured on the Isle of Man flag, coat of arms, currency, and stamps. The triskelion has been associated with the Isle of Man since the 13th century and is often interpreted as representing the island's three historical divisions or as symbols of strength and movement.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, regional souvenir silver became highly popular across the British Isles. Items such as bookmarks and vesta cases were frequently crafted with regional symbols like the Triskelion, or Three Legs of Man, as collectable keepsakes for visitors and heraldry enthusiasts.

Traditional bookmarks are typically struck or cast from sterling silver, consisting of 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed for durability. The design often integrates a flat blade with a die-stamped clip mechanism and a decorative cast finial at the top.

Authentic pieces carry British assay hallmarks stamped directly onto the surface, including a makers mark, the lion passant for sterling purity, an assay office symbol, and a date letter. Checking these marks under magnification confirms the origin, maker, and exact year of manufacture.

A silver bookmark can be used to style a desk arrangement alongside leather-bound volumes, placed atop a stack of coffee table books, or arranged inside a glass tabletop display case alongside other small silver curiosities.

Silver bookmarks should be polished gently with a dry, soft microfibre silver cloth to remove surface tarnish without scratching the metal. To avoid chemical damage or loss of historic oxidation in detailed relief areas, liquid silver dips should be avoided.
