Antique 2.30ct Black Opal and 18ct Yellow Gold Cameo Ring Circa 1900

1900 - 1920
For Sale by AC Silver
Description

A stunning, fine and impressive antique 2.30ct black opal and 18 carat yellow gold cameo ring; part of our diverse antique opal jewellery and estate jewelry collections.

This stunning, fine and impressive antique opal ring has been crafted in 18ct yellow gold.

The rectangular setting is ornamented with a hand carved 2.30ct black opal cameo*, depicting a profile of a man in armour, bearing resemblance to centurions or the mythological hero Archilles.

The cameo is held within a plain rounded collet setting.

The trifurcating ring shoulders integrate with the main setting and blend seamlessly with the plain ring shank.

This cameo ring has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 18 carat gold.

This impressive ring is supplied with an IDGL gemstone grading report card.

A rare black opal cameo ring in yellow gold is an evocative gift for connoisseurs of antique jewellery, equally suited to birthdays, anniversaries or as a personal heirloom of lasting significance.

* Attributed to Wilhelm Schmidt of Idar-Oberstein, this opal exemplifies the master carver's pioneering technique of using the stone's natural matrix as a contrasting ground — a method that heightens the gem's iridescence. Trained in Paris and later based in London's Hatton Garden, Schmidt's work is celebrated for elevating opal carving to an art form of sculptural subtlety. Despite his profound influence on gem carving, Schmidt rarely signed his works, lending pieces like this a quiet, almost secretive distinction.

Images do not always reflect the true colour and brilliance of gemstones and diamonds. The video however provides a truer representation of the actual colour and showcases each stone.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique opal cameo ring features a natural opal gemstone carved in relief with a portrait or profile motif, set within a precious metal mount such as 18ct gold. Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these pieces combine gemstone carving with traditional goldsmithing.

These pieces were typically crafted using solid 18ct or 15ct yellow gold for the setting, designed with split shoulders or decorative galleries to support the central gem. The carvings were executed directly into natural solid opals, utilizing the stones colour structure.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-carved surface contours visible under magnification, era-appropriate hallmarks, natural play-of-colour throughout the gem, and light wear patterns consistent with age along the gold setting edges.

A carved opal statement ring serves as a focal piece when worn on the index or ring finger, complemented by simple contemporary gold bands or clean modern tailoring that allows the gemstones play-of-colour to stand out.

Opals require careful handling due to their composition; clean using a soft dry or slightly dampened cloth, avoid exposure to chemicals, extreme temperature changes, and ultrasonic cleaners, and store separately to prevent surface scratches.
