Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A monastery table, historically known in France as a Table Monastere, is a style of refectory dining table originally designed for communal dining halls in religious orders and rural estates. Characterised by robust construction, heavy trestle bases, and a central stretcher, these tables were built to accommodate large gatherings and withstand centuries of daily use.

Traditional European refectory and monastery tables were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as European oak, walnut, or chestnut. Construction relies on historic joinery techniques, including thick plank tops, mortise and tenon joints, and removable wooden pegs securing the horizontal stretcher beam through the end supports.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of traditional hand-planing on the timber surfaces, hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, and exposed peg construction along the base. Look for natural age-related oxidisation in the oak, uneven wear along the stretcher where feet rested, and original hand-forged hardware or wooden key fastenings.

A large oak farmhouse table acts as an anchor piece, pairing well with contemporary dining chairs, modern pendant lighting, or minimalist neutral walls to create contrast. Complement the rich wood tones with linen textiles, stoneware ceramics, or natural greenery to maintain a balanced, textured aesthetic.

To maintain solid oak furniture, clean surfaces regularly with a soft, damp cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners. Apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to nourish the timber, and protect the wood finish from direct heat sources and high humidity fluctuations.
