Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Papier-mache wall pockets became popular during the mid-to-late nineteenth century in Victorian homes as practical decorative containers for organising incoming mail, calling cards, and stationery. Manufacturers used compressed paper pulp or laminated paper sheets shaped into molds, finished with baked lacquer coatings and hand-applied ornamentation.

Traditional Victorian papier-mache pieces were created by pressing paper sheets or pulp mixed with glue into oiled molds. Once dried, the objects were dense and hard, allowing them to be polished, painted with japan lacquer, and decorated using gilding, mother-of-pearl inlays, or stencilled geometric motifs.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically exhibit signs of age such as fine surface crazing in the lacquer, minor rubbing along exposed edges, and authentic hand-cut keyhole mounting apertures. The underside or back usually reveals raw painted paper substrate rather than smooth modern resin or synthetic materials.

These decorative containers can be mounted in an entryway, home office, or hallway to hold mail, postcards, or dry floral arrangements. Arranging a pair side by side or vertically on a narrow wall space creates a balanced, historic focal point.

Clean papier-mache items using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove dust. Keep the material away from liquid cleaners, excess moisture, and direct heat sources, as water can swell the compressed paper layers and damage the surface lacquer.
