Description

A lovely Bow porcelain serving dish of rectangular shape with canted corners. Beautifully painted in shades of underglaze blue with a central image of a stylised lotus flower and bamboo, set within a border of diaper panels, intersected with reserved white flower heads in a blue ground. The walls to the reverse are decorated with simple foliate sprays. c.1760.

It measures 17.8cm (10 7/8") wide by 18.1cm (7 1/8") deep and 3.8cm (1 1/2") high.

In very good condition, a shallow surface chip to the bottom right corner. A small chip to the rim to the bottom left side, with a 3/4" glaze line to the underside and another small glaze loss / chip to the underside close by. No other damage, repair or restoration and minor handling wear.

Founded in East London around 1747, the Bow porcelain factory was renowned for producing early soft-paste porcelain, frequently decorated with underglaze cobalt blue motifs inspired by imported Chinese porcelain.

Georgian soft-paste porcelain was typically formulated using bone ash, clay, and ground glass frit, which fired at lower temperatures than hard-paste porcelain and produced a distinct creamy body with a warm glaze.
