View of a Canal - Antique Oil Painting

1900 - 1920
Description

Oil on canvas showing a view of a canal with boats an industry in the background. The canvas is signed by the artist Jules Postel (1867-1955) and is mounted in a stunning painted wooden frame with attractive slip. The artist has used a subtle blue/grey palette for this painting.

Jules Auguste Joseph Postelle (or Jules Postel) was born on April 15, 1867, in Mons, was the son of Adrien Postelle, a merchant, and Amandine Martinelle. He was married to Adélaïde Bélien, who died in Etterbeek in 1935.

He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Mons and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.

He painted sun-drenched houses, golden harvests, red roofs, and autumnal woods. He also depicted humble interiors with staircases. His subjects were treated with vivid colors. He also expressed his fascination with colour and light in landscapes of Italy and the South of France, including Nice and Cap Ferrat.

In 1895, he was chosen as one of the illustrators for the annual album of the Belgian Etchers' Society. He presented his works in various exhibitions organized by the "Le Bon Vouloir" circle in Mons, at the Salonnet in Brussels, at the Petite Galerie, and at the Brussels artistic circle.

Postel joined the Mons artistic circle "Le Bon Vouloir" and then moved to Brussels after the First World War.

His works can be found at the Mons Museum of Fine Arts.
