Longcase Clocks - Kemp of Lewes

18th century
Description

An excellent oak longcase clock of small proportions by this well known Lewes Clockmaker.

The high quality 8 day duration movement striking the hours on a bell and with five plate pillars. The 12" arched brass dial with separate silvered brass chapter ring, seconds ring, date aperture, matted centre, makers name and with separate dial to the arch featuring a Strike/Silent facility. The dial also with very finely made blued steel hands. The typical Lewes oak case with mahogany crossbanding to both the long trunk door and to the plain base which is finished with a single plinth. The hood with gilt wood capitals to the attached angle pillars and broken arch top.

Note: William Kemp was born in 1722. The well known Lewes Clockmaker Richard Comber was apprenticed to him from 1754 to 1762 and also John Holman who went into partnership with him from 1787 to 1797. His shop was in Bull Lane in 1790 and he died in 1798.
