Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Around 1900, during the late Victorian and Art Nouveau periods, figurative alabaster carvings became highly popular across Europe. Sculptors used soft alabaster stone to create evocative portrait busts, frequently depicting children or allegorical figures with delicate facial details and flowing drapery.

Period sculptors primarily carved these pieces from fine-grained alabaster or Carrara marble. The main bust was often mounted onto a contrasting socle base made from coloured marbles, such as serpentine or verd antique, attached using a metal central rod.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved tool marks in less visible areas, natural veining within the stone, and subtle surface translucency when held to light. Over time, genuine antique alabaster develops a soft patination and slight surface wear, differing from modern cold-cast resin reproductions.

A carved stone bust provides texture and historical contrast when displayed on a wooden mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table. Grouping the item with modern artwork or minimalist ceramic vessels highlights the classical form without overwhelming the surrounding space.

Alabaster is a porous, soluble mineral that should never be washed with water or liquid cleaners. Dust the surface using a dry, soft-bristled brush, and preserve the stone finish by applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax with a soft cloth.
