Description

A superb Worcester porcelain shall shaped dessert dish painted in the "Sir Joshua Reynolds" pattern with a shaped outer wet blue ground, over gilded with a geometric diaper design, intersected with stylised foliate starbursts with delicate hanging tendrils. The central reserve shows a handsome ho-ho type bird, with magnificent tail, sitting on top of a rock, with stylised twining vine branches ending with exotic lotus type flowers. A vibrant kakiemon style palette of brilliant aquamarine turquoise, iron red, lemon yellow and lilac blue, with black enamel outlines and detailing. The shaped finger hold section is picked out with puce enamel, underglaze wet blue and gilding.

Marked with the Wigornia "W" mark. c.1770.

It measures 7 1/2" (19.1cm) wide by 7 5/8" (19.3cm) deep and 1 1/2" (3.8cm) high.

Condition is excellent with no damage, repair or restoration and minimal handling wear.

FAQs

First Period Worcester porcelain, also known as the Dr Wall period, spans from the founding of the factory in 1751 until 1783. Wares from this era are characterised by a soft-paste body containing soapstone, exceptional durability for hot liquids, and hand-painted decorations inspired by Chinese, Japanese, and Meissen patterns.

Soft-paste porcelain from this era utilised a mixture of china clay, frit, and steatite (soapstone) sourced from Cornwall. The body was painted with overglaze enamel pigments and gilded with gold leaf before firing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit a greenish translucency when held to light, due to the soapstone content. Marks such as the fretted square, crescent mark, or workmans marks were commonly painted underglaze in blue, though unmarked pieces from the era also exist.

A shell-shaped porcelain dish can be displayed upright on an acrylic or wooden easel stand within a glass cabinet, styled atop a sideboard, or incorporated into a wall plate arrangement.

Clean gently using tepid water and a mild non-abrasive detergent applied with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking, dishwasher use, or chemical polishers, as these will cause degradation to the overglaze enamel paint and gilding.
