Ironstone china was developed as a durable alternative to imported Chinese porcelain, characterised by bright transfer-printed and hand-painted decorations.

Antique comports were crafted from vitreous earthenware mixed with ground ironstone, petuntse, and flint, yielding a dense ceramic body. Decorative finishes involved hand-applied enamel colours, overglaze transfer prints, and gilded scroll accents.

Authentic Masons ironstone features printed or impressed maker marks on the base, frequently displaying a crown motif along with Masons Patent Ironstone China. Genuine 19th-century pieces also exhibit a heavy physical weight, a slight blue-grey tone to the glaze, and hand-gilded detailing.
