Victorian Cane Seated Country House Library Chair

19th century
Description

This a lovely quality rare surviving Victorian mahogany and cane library chair. Standing on carved mahogany legs all complete with original brass casters. The cane work is all in tact which is great to see and looks to be original throughout. The chair would benefit from a seat cushion which we can add for an additional cost should you like. The proportions are neat and the details are elegant and not too heavy. Overall condition is very good with no weakness. There is evidence of a historic repair to the front left leg but all solid and sympathetically done.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian library chairs evolved during the nineteenth century to provide comfortable, ventilated seating for reading rooms and studies. Incorporating lightweight woven cane panels alongside robust timber frames, these chairs offered ergonomic support while reflecting the eras preference for detailed woodwork and classical proportions.

These chairs were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, combined with natural split rattan cane for the seat and backrest. Additional elements often included brass castors, close-nailed leather trim, and fabric or velvet padding on the armrests.

Authentic pieces feature hand-woven cane work threaded through individual perimeter holes, period-correct brass castors, and hand-carved details such as reeded legs or scrolled terminals. Structural joints typically show evidence of traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery with age-appropriate wear to the underside frame.

A Victorian library chair functions effectively as a focal accent piece alongside a modern writing desk or situated near a bookshelf. Pairing the rich wood tones and woven textures with neutral walls and clean-lined architectural elements balances historical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Cane seating requires periodic light moistening with water to prevent brittleness, while remaining protected from direct heat sources. Wood surfaces should be dusted with a soft cloth and preserved using a high-grade beeswax polish, avoiding synthetic sprays.
