Born in Liverpool in 1874, Frank Moss Bennett was a London artist who specialised in painting portraits, genre and historical subjects. He began his training in 1892 at Slade School of Art in London and finished his education at the Royal Academy of Arts.

Bennett won a gold medal from the Royal Academy for a lithograph he created in 1899 titled “Ladas the Greek runner falling dead as he goes to receive his crown of olives at Olympia”

Bennett is best known for his Elizabethan subjects, many of which became well known through calendars and other forms of popular reproduction. He is also known for his portraits of soldiers killed in World War I, usually commissioned by their grieving relatives.

The present work is a sketch for a portrait of a young lady in typical period attire. It is executed within a painted oval border and shows lovely tonality.

Condition report: In good clean condition. Some old areas of light abrasion. Canvas is in good serviceable condition and reasonable tension. Slight impression of the stretcher bars only noticeable in artificial light.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Traditional British portrait sketches are preliminary or spontaneous studies executed in oil paint, often focusing on capturing the sitters facial expression, posture, and lighting before a full studio painting. These works often feature visible, fluid brushwork, vignetted compositions, and rich tonal shading.

These artworks are predominantly executed using oil-based pigments mixed with linseed oil, painted onto stretched linen canvas or wooden panels. Frames from this era are typically constructed from timber with moulded gesso detailing and gilded in gold leaf or bronze powders.

Authentic oil paintings demonstrate natural age-related craquelure across the paint layer, natural canvas darkening on the reverse, and hand-carved or aged gesso frames. Signatures, artist monograms, and period-correct stretcher bars with iron or brass tacks further confirm authenticity.

A classic oil portrait can be hung individually on a narrow accent wall or integrated into an eclectic gallery wall alongside modern photographs and abstract prints. Pairing traditional gilded art with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a balanced, curated aesthetic.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent canvas warping and pigment fading. Dust the canvas and gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or damp cloths.
