Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bird and flower painting, known as huaniao hua, is a distinct genre of Chinese art that matured during the Song dynasty. These compositions historically feature naturalistic studies of flora, birds, and insects, often carrying specific symbolic meanings within Asian visual tradition.

Traditional Chinese watercolours were created using organic and mineral pigments, ink, and gouache applied to mulberry paper, silk, or pith paper sourced from the stem of Tetrapanax papyrifer. These works were frequently mounted with silk borders before being framed.

Authentic examples display hand-applied gouache or mineral pigments with fine brushwork, showing age marks such as toning, minor foxing, or light cracking on delicate paper substrates. Examining the weave of silk mountings and pigment density provides structural clues to age.

Framed oriental watercolours function well as focal points above sideboards, consoles, or as part of a curated gallery wall. Pairing traditional Chinoiserie themes with clean, neutral walls allows the natural pigments and detailed brushwork to be highlighted.

Paper watercolours must be displayed away from direct light and humid environments to prevent pigment fading and paper degradation. Framing should utilise UV-filtering glass and non-reactive, acid-free mounting materials to protect the delicate fibres.
