Helena Wolfsohn Dresden Large Vase with Lid, Watteau Scenes, C.1880

19th century
Description

An impressive and rare Helena Wolfsohn Dresden porcelain vase with original lid, dating to circa 1880. The vase features finely painted Watteau-style cartouches depicting romantic couples, framed by rich raised gilding. The turquoise ground is enhanced with hand-painted floral panels, characteristic of high-quality Dresden decoration of the late 19th century.

To the reverse is the underglaze blue mark used by Helena Wolfsohn during the short lifespan of the manufactory (1879–1883), so the products of this manufactory are rare. The vase exemplifies the workshop’s role in continuing the finest traditions of German porcelain painting. The blanks were sourced from major manufactories, while the decoration was executed to an exceptional standard. The large scale of the vase (37.5 cm tall) and the refined color palette make this an outstanding collector’s piece.

Condition: Excellent antique condition. Minor wear to gilding on the finial; otherwise no chips, cracks, or restorations.

Dimensions:

Height: 37.5 cm

Diameter: 22.5 cm

Weight: 2533 g

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dresden porcelain refers to decorative ceramics produced by decorated studios in and around Dresden, Germany, starting in the 19th century. Watteau decoration incorporates romantic, pastoral, and outdoor social scenes inspired by the 18th-century French Rococo painter Jean-Antoine Watteau.

These pieces were crafted from fine hard-paste porcelain, high-fired for strength and clarity. Decorators applied ground colours, hand-painted intricate miniature panels, and finished the pieces with heavy burnished gilding.

Authentic items feature fine hand-painted details rather than printed transfers, quality gilding with raised or scrollwork tooling, and specific workshop marks under the glaze, such as studio monograms or crowned ciphers.

Position the vase as a focal piece on a neutral sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table. Pairing elaborate porcelain with understated contemporary textures highlights the historical artwork while keeping the space uncluttered.

Dust regularly with a soft, clean microfibre brush or cloth. Avoid immersion in water, harsh detergents, and abrasive sponges, as moisture and chemicals can degrade gilded accents and overglaze enamel painting.
