Description

This magnificent salt-bag - 'namakdan' in Persian - was woven by the Owlad Haj Ali tribe within the Haft Lang section of the Bakhtiari confederacy circa 1900.

The face of the bag is intricately woven in soumak technique and comprises stylised birds in the main border surrounding a central zoomorphic panel in the centre. I love the back with its poewerful 'eyes', warding off the evil eye and protecting the contents of the bag. Stunning! The weaver has inserted rows of knotted-pile at the base of the bag for added protection during use.
