Subject: This is a striking 19th-century etching of a bearded man in a fur cap, after the original composition by Giuseppe Longhi, which itself was based on a lost or unidentified work by Titian (Tiziano Vecellio). Unlike the original Italian engraving by Longhi, this version shows a distinctly British academic hand — with looser drypoint work, experimental hatching, and expressive re-interpretation of the original pose.
We cannot find another exact copy of the etching anywhere....We are speculating that it may have produced as part of an educational or museum-based print project, possibly directed by William Young Ottley (former Keeper of Prints, British Museum) The work is dated 1837 in ink and may have been
...privately printed or issued in a limited curatorial edition.

Condition Report: This original 1837 etching is in good antique condition, with the expected age-toning and faint scattered foxing. The paper is clean overall with strong plate lines and no tears.
