Pair of Victorian Crystoleoms Paintings

19th century
Description

A charming pair of Victorian Crystoleoms, beautifully depicting delightful children at play. These exquisite paintings are crafted using the unique Crystoleoms technique, applied to fine bowed glass panels and set within their original, elegantly carved gilt frames. As with all antiques, subtle imperfections are present, adding to the character and timeless appeal of these highly decorative pieces.

The Crystoleoms process was a method of applying colour to an albumen print, popular from c. 1880 – c. 1910. An albumen print was pasted face down to the inside of a concave piece of glass. Once the adhesive was dry, the paper backing of the print was rubbed away, leaving only the transparent emulsion on the glass. The image was then coloured by hand, using oil paints.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A crystoleum is a late 19th-century artwork created by adhering an albumen photographic print to the reverse of a convex glass sheet, rendering the paper translucent, and hand-painting the image from behind using oil pigments.

A traditional crystoleum consists of a convex glass plate, a photographic paper print treated with starch or wax, hand-applied oil paints, a secondary glass or cardboard backing sheet, and an ornate gilded wood or composition frame.

Authentic period crystoleums feature curved glass, a subtle depth caused by the distance between the glass front and rear paint layer, faint photographic base details under close inspection, and age-appropriate wear to the gilding and backing.

Position the pair symmetrically above a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece, or integrate them into a gallery wall on a dark or textured backdrop to contrast with the warm gilded frames.

Dust the glass and frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid glass cleaners or damp sponges that could penetrate the frame edges and damage the delicate paper or paint layers behind.
