Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Florentine style mirrors are characterised by deeply carved, openwork wood frames featuring elaborate scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and shell motifs. Originating in Florence, Italy, these frames are traditional wood turnings finished with water gilding or oil gilding.

Traditional Florentine frames are carved from softwoods such as pine or lime wood, coated with gesso, and layered with bole before gold leaf is applied. The mirror element typically consists of silvered glass plates set into the hand-carved surround.

Authentic period giltwood frames often show natural age-related wear, including dark reddish-brown bole showing through worn gold leaf, known as rub-through. The reverse side typically exhibits hand-sawn timber backing, square nails, and evidence of hand carving rather than molded resin.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting fragile gold leaf. Water, liquid cleaners, and abrasive cloths should be avoided, as moisture dissolves the underlying gesso foundation.

A carved gilt mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a minimalist sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table. The detailed gold frame provides visual contrast against plain dark or neutral painted walls in modern or traditional spaces.
