Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Figural Candlesticks (1865)

19th century
For Sale by AC Silver
Description

An exceptional, fine and impressive, pair of antique Victorian English cast sterling silver figural candlesticks; an addition of our ornamental silverware collection.

These exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English cast sterling silver candlesticks have a circular-shaped form with figural columns.

The flared circular capital of each silver candlestick is encircled with a leaf decorated border.

The exceptional cast silver columns of the candlestick have been modelled in the form of male and female figure, each holding an elongated fluted support to the aforementioned capital; the matching opposing stance of each candlestick is a fine feature.

Each figure bears grape cluster and fruiting vine details to their hair* and are draped in billowing fabric clothing; the female's clothes extend to the ankles, whereas the male's wrap partially covers the anatomy and conjoins to one side of the waist.

The columns are supported by a circular waisted platform to a domed circular base encompassed with further leaf decoration to the rim.

Victorian silver candle holders make an elegant, timeless gift for weddings, anniversaries, housewarmings or milestone birthdays. Ideal for those who appreciate antique design and period craftsmanship.

* Whilst the characters have not been identified, their hair and attire could be associated with an artistic portrayal of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, agriculture and fertility (Roman god named Bacchus) and his wife or his children.

The cast decoration is all very sharp.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the 19th century, Victorian figural silver candlesticks feature sculpted human or mythological forms supporting the candle nozzle, drawing inspiration from Classical, Renaissance, or Rococo motifs.

These items were typically cast in separate sections using the lost-wax or sand-casting method, followed by hand-chasing for fine detail before assembly onto weighted or solid circular bases.

Authentic British pieces bear a complete set of hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling purity, a town mark, a date letter, and a registered makers mark.

Position them as a focal point on a dining table, sideboard, or mantelpiece to introduce metallic sheen and classical sculptural detail within contemporary decorative schemes.

Wipe regularly with a soft cotton cloth and polish sparingly using a non-abrasive silver cream to prevent excessive tarnish while preserving chased details and subtle surface oxidation.
