17th century South Yorkshire oak backstool, the two scroll carved arched back to panelled seats over turned and railed under-frame.

English, circa 1660-1680

By repute the carved centre of the back rails represents the head of Charles I. This emblem was a covert way of sharing the owner’s support for the Crown and the Royalist Cause.

A backstool is a seventeenth-century single chair design featuring a backrest built onto a stool frame, with regional South Yorkshire examples identified by carved scroll cresting and double shaped back rails.

These chairs were crafted from native English oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with hand-cut wooden pegs, supported by turned front legs and low stretcher rails.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved decoration, peg joinery visible on the frame, natural timber shrinkage over time, and dark patination accumulated in carved recesses.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry cloth and apply beeswax paste once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish, avoiding damp environments and direct heat sources.
