Rare Pair of 1930’s Dicon Nance Armchairs – St.Ives Studio

A very rare pair of beautifully, hand made solid ash wood ladder back carver dining chairs by the designer, Dicon Nance, the brother of Robin Nance in St. Ives, Cornwall. Both the chairs are in superb, clean and strong condition and all are complete with the original seagrass rushed seats, that are all intact and strong. They are very interesting cabinet makers who worked closely with Bernard Leach designing and making the famous pottery wheels and artist Ben Nicholson whom he made the canvas stretchers for his paintings. He also made all Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture and display stands, Dicon Nance was her assistant until 1971. A very rare pair of beautifully made 1930’s armchairs made by a very interesting Cornish maker. The seats are 44cm high.

Ladderback rush armchairs evolved from historic vernacular country furniture and were revived during the Arts and Crafts movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Craftspeople favoured the style for its simple geometry, functional integrity, and connection to regional handmaking traditions.

These chairs are constructed using solid timber framesoften oak or ashjoined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The seats are created by tightly weaving twisted freshwater rush or seagrass directly around the seat rails to form a durable envelope.

Authentic studio craft chairs from this period display hand-finished woodwork, slight natural variations in the timber, traditional jointing without modern fasteners, and hand-woven rush seats showing authentic aged patination.
