Gillers Antiques Ltd has dated these Japanese Imari Oval Jardinieres to the 1880s.
The sides are decorated with blossoming trees, garden fences, and stylized floral reserves, all executed with lively brushwork. The painting is entirely hand-done, characteristic of quality Imari wares from the late 19th century. Both jardinieres are unmarked, as is typical for large Meiji period Imari. Likely made in the Arita region, Saga province, Kyushu - the historic center of Japanese Imari porcelain since the 17th century. Finding a matching pair in such excellent antique condition is a true collector’s rarity.
