Rare Royal Doulton Mandarin Ware Vase, Yellow Ground, Attributed R. Allen, C.1920

1900 - 1920
Description

A rare Royal Doulton Art Deco vase from the Mandarin Ware series, attributed to principal designer Robert Allen, circa 1920. Finely hand-painted with bold polychrome florals on a vibrant yellow ground and finished with the characteristic black-glazed rim, this vase exemplifies the quality and artistry that made Mandarin Ware internationally celebrated and highly collectible. The bright yellow ground places this example within the highly collectible 'Imperial Chinese Yellow' line of Royal Doulton Mandarin Ware. Marked to the base with the Royal Doulton green factory stamp and an impressed model number. While unsigned, the design, color, and glaze are strongly associated with Allen’s signature style. A registration number (RN) further confirms its authenticity as part of the protected Mandarin Ware line. This example is of exceptional rarity and true museum quality—Mandarin Ware vases with a yellow ground are seldom offered in such excellent condition and are highly prized by advanced collectors.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mandarin Ware refers to a series of decorative ceramics produced by Royal Doulton in the 1920s, characterized by bold coloured grounds and Far Eastern floral or figurative enamel decorations.

These pieces were typically cast from fine earthenware, coated in a coloured base glaze, and subsequently hand-decorated with vitreous enamels before undergoing a secondary firing.

Authentic items generally feature the stamped Royal Doulton lion and crown backstamp, pattern numbers printed or painted on the base, and distinctive raised enamel detailing.

Display the vessel on a neutral sideboard, mantelpiece, or shelving unit as a standalone accent piece to allow its bold colour and surface decoration to contrast with minimalist surroundings.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemicals or submersion in water, which can damage overglaze enamels and original backstamps.
